THE WOMAN IN BLACK

This inspired adaptation of Susan Hill’s gothic novella is now the second longest running non-musical play in London, having premiered at the Hammersmith Lyric back in 1989 before transferring to the Fortune Theatre later that year. Twenty-six years later this spine-chilling classic is still playing at the Fortune and remains one of the West End’s truly unmissable shows.

In The Woman in Black, Arthur Kipps, a retired solicitor, recounts his chilling encounter with a mysterious Woman in Black at the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the sole inhabitant of Eel Marsh House. Now an old man and still haunted by the memory, Kipps hires a sceptical young actor in a desperate attempt to rid himself of the ghosts of the past.

Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation ratchets up the tension by making The Woman in Black a two man show performed on a sparsely decorated stage. Light and sound effects are employed for a terror-inducing effect as the audience is drawn into an eerie hinterland of marshes, moaning wind and the horrifying spectre of The Woman in Black.

‘One of the most brilliantly effective spine-chillers you will ever encounter’ - The Daily Telegraph

‘Guaranteed to chill the blood’ – Evening Standard
