Matilda the Musical was inspired by the much-loved Roald Dahl novel, one of best-known works by the world’s favourite author of children’s fiction. This utterly captivating musical masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company explodes onto the stage as a celebration of childhood and the power of imagination.
The story follows Matilda, a bright young girl who loves reading and learning. When she is sent to school she encounters the cruel headmistress Miss Trunchbull who loathes children and the friendly teacher Miss Honey who befriends her.
Filled with the sort of playful mischief and delight in storytelling that defines Roald Dahl’s oeuvre, Matilda is ultimately an inspiring story of childhood hope and fantasy and this award-laden adaptation does the British author proud.
Matilda the Musical premiered at the RSC’s The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010. After completing a hugely successful run it transferred to the West End and is now performed at the Cambridge Theatre.
The Musical was adapted for the stage by Dennis Kelly and features original songs by internationally acclaimed musical comedian Tim Minchin.
Matilda the Musical has been shortlisted for Best West End Show in the 2015 WhatsOnStage Awards.
