Come From Away at the Phoenix Theatre

27 Feb 2019

Come From Away received its UK premiere at the Phoenix Theatre with official opening night on Monday 18th February! The musical written by Canadian authors Irene Sankoff and David Hein and directed by Christopher Ashley, has finally arrived to the West End with previews from 30th January. The show debuted on Broadway in March 2017 winning the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical.

With a cast of 12 actors, starring Rachel Tucker, Jenna Boyd, Nathanael Campbell, Clive Carter, Mary Doherty, Robert Hands, Helen Hobson, Jonathan Andrew Hume, Harry Morrison, Emma Salvo, David Shannon  and Cat Simmons, Come From Away tells the true story of the air passengers who were grounded in Canada on 9/11 and the Newfoundland people who welcomed them.

On 11 September 2001, 38 planes were diverted to Gander International Airport in Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada, carrying 6.579 passengers from 100 countries. The exhausted travellers were welcomed by the residents of Gander and the surrounding  towns, whose population was of about 10.000 people at the time. With no more that 550 hotel rooms available in the area, foreigners and locals were forced to live together and to rediscover the power of humanity in a time of darkness. From these true events, Sankoff and Hein wrote a joyous new musical that tells a story of friendship, hope, trust and community.
