20 years of Mamma Mia

03 Apr 2019

Mamma Mia! celebrates twenty years in the West End this month! It’s already been two decades since that 6th April 1999 when a new musical developed around ABBA’s hits opened at the Prince Edward Theatre! The show was written by Catherine Johnson and directed by Phyllida and immediately received a warm welcome by London audiences. In 2004 the jukebox musical moved to the Prince of Wales where it played until 2012 when it found a new home at the Novello Theatre where it still plays now.

Twenty years, two movies and many international production afterwards, Mammia Mia! keeps entertaining London audiences night after night!

The story is well-known. Donna runs a inn in a wonderful Greek island. Her daughter Sophie is getting married and dreams to be escorted down the aisle by her father. The only problem is that she doesn’t know who he is, so she invites three of her mother’s former lovers and possible fathers to her wedding… Mamma Mia! is a funny and feel-good tale of friendship, love and memories told through twenty-two of ABBA’s timeless songs including Dancing Queen, S.O.S., Voulez Vous, Knowing Me Knowing You, Thank You For The Music and, of course, Mamma Mia.
