Hairspray the Musical is set in the 1960s and based on a plump teenager called Tracy Turnblad with big hair and a big heart who dreams of dancing on the Corny Collins Show. At the audition, however, the producer rejects her because of her weight, along with a black girl. In detention later, she meets a black student who teaches her some dance moves and Tracy shows them off to Corny Collins at the school dance, who casts her in his show. Tracy becomes a star overnight, and decides to use her fame to integrate the Corny Collins show, which still features 'Negro Day' instead of letting the black kids dance on the main show.
